DATA DICTIONARY
What the fields mean
Report
One row in the NOAA Storm Events details table after filtering to county-coded records. It is not synonymous with one storm system.
Event type
The NOAA/NWS label stored in EVENT_TYPE. We do not merge Flood with Flash Flood or rewrite the official taxonomy.
Report rate
Ten-year report count divided by 2024 ACS five-year population, multiplied by 100,000. It is shown only with a matched denominator and is not a future probability.
Injuries and fatalities
Sums of direct and indirect fields in the selected NOAA rows. These counts reflect the archive, not every consequence of weather.
Property and crop damage
NOAA/NWS estimates parsed from the filed strings. Dollar totals are nominal and are neither audited nor inflation-adjusted.
Dates, sources, and magnitudes
Recent-row tables preserve NOAA event IDs, start dates, source labels, magnitude fields, and tornado scale where available. Blanks remain unavailable.
Source lineage
NOAA Storm Events bulk access supplies the event records. The American Community Survey supplies population context.
